Five hundred years ago, North Yorkshire was so heavily wooded that it was said a squirrel could travel from Skipton to Knaresborough without touching the ground. Now, the Yorkshire Dales have the unenviable reputation of being one of the least wooded areas of England.

We had a ride down the Dale to Burnsall tonight to deliver some Granola; in the wake of a heavy shower and receding blue-black rain clouds, the sun was shining and in front of us was probably one of the most magnificent rainbows I have ever seen. I just wish that I had had my camera in the car.

Several of the west- flowing rivers of North Craven support what many fly fishermen believe to be the gamest of all British game fish. This is not, as one would expect, the mighty salmon, but its so-called "poor relation", the sea trout.

I didn't manage to get to the lavender to cut it before it rained. Since then I have only had one chance and on that occasion it was early evening and the midges were out in force on the look-out for supper! I was eaten into submission after about 10 minutes.

We have had a good week. Most of the sheep are now clipped and, apart from one field, all of Raisgill is cleared. It did go into big bale silage, but that is partly the fault of the weathermen who forecast showers at the weekend.
