100 years ago Skipton Guardians discussed sending boys to "trainingships" to ensure they became respectable citizens. However, the Guardians were told an 11-year-old Skipton boy who had spent five years on such a scheme had found his way back to Skipton where he was in danger of degenerating.

100 years ago The Right Reverend Eros Nuttal, Archbishop of Jamaica, and his brother, the Rev Ezra Nuttal, Wesleyan minister of Cape Town, South Africa, were visiting friends in Barnoldswick. Being natives of the town and sons of the late James Nuttal, who was a shopkeeper in Church Street, they were said to be "amazed" at the growth of the once small village.

100 years ago The National Federation of Meat Traders Association was taking up an issue which needed to be carefully considered by Craven farmers. It was putting in force a resolution carried at the annual conference for the boycotting of English farmers who refused to give warranties that the animals they offered for sale were free from disease.

100 years ago A large number of visitors enjoyed the bank holiday at Bolton Abbey. The stepping stones were a source of amusement as one of the stones near the middle had been broken by the late flood. Some ladies leapt across the gap, but in most cases they turned back. Hundreds of visitors on both sides of the river cheered the attempts and laughed as dozens fell into the water.

100 years ago Heavy rain experienced in the early part of the nesting season wrought havoc on the grouse breeding preserves in Long Preston, but second hatchings turned out better than expected. This indicated that many birds would be late and it could be the beginning of September before genuinely good sport could be had.

100 years ago Skipton Hospital Gala attracted a big influx of visitors to the town. The High Street was a picturesque sight as crowds gathered for the procession. Ladies in nursing garb wended their way among the crowd collecting coppers and the occasional silver coin.

100 years ago Giggleswick School's annual speech day was deprived of much of its attractiveness by the unfortunate weather. Rain fell during the day with the result that a considerable portion of outdoor activities had to be curtailed or abandoned. However, experiments and apparatus made in the laboratory were shown and in the museum, the Victorian Cave collection proved very popular.

100 years ago The annual sale of work of inmates of the Skipton Union Workhouse took place. The aim was to encourage the poor people to employ their talents in some useful craftsmanship. The majority of inmates were incapable of heavy work, but light and useful craftsmanship seemed to come easily to them, reported the Herald.

100 years ago A steam car being driven on the road between Hellifield and Gisburn turned completely over and rolled to the bottom of a hill. The car, a ton in weight and costing £1,000, was occupied by several people. It was returning from Hellifield and had reached the top of an incline when it refused to proceed. The driver succeeded in getting steam up, but the car rolled backwards and quickly sustained speed. The brakes failed and "with great presence of mind", the driver ordered everyone out.

100 years ago It was announced that Skipton was free from the smallpox scourge which had scarred the bulk of inhabitants and caused the town to be shunned by outsiders. Skipton residents had also been banned by certain seaside health resorts.
