Twenty/20 group leaders Settle ease past Barlick
 |
| Barnoldswick wicketkeeper Matthew Nutter wins a appeal for an lbw decision against Settle's Matthew Wildman in the Ramsbottom Cup on Sunday. |
Settle are the runaaway leaders of Group One with another victory in the Twenty/20 competition held last Friday night.
On their visit to Barnoldswick, Settle bowled well to restrict the hosts to 100 all out, with only skipper Michael Scothern (34) and Matthew Nutter (19) reaching double figures.
Settle captain Jeff Ellis (3-14) and Bret Silvey (3-17) were the pick of the bowlers.
Settle only lost four wickets in comfortably passing the total with two overs remaining. Silvey (26) and Shaun Airey (14) got them off to a solid start and Robbie Preston finished things off in style with a dashing 28 runs.
Shaukat Sheraz (2-15) was the pick of the Barlick bowlers.
Scothern said: "It was a fairly solid win for Settle. But we see the Twenty/20 as a bit of good fun. We like to give our fringe players a bit of a game."
An excellent batting performance from young Matthew Haines lifted Earby to their first victory in a Twenty/20 Group One match at home to Clitheroe.
Earby professional Ali Azmat (38) and fellow opener Chris Bowker (24) got the game off to a good start for the Applegarth side, putting on a partnership of 72 before Azmat was caught by Daniel Turner.
Haines entered the fray and put on fine display of big hitting, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 39 balls, a knock which included four sixes and five fours as Earby closed the innings on 166 for three.
In reply Clitheroe started well with opener Peter Dibb scoring 43 off 43 balls and fellow opener Paul Turner scoring 19. After the latter got out Daniel Turner had a knock of 29 but then with Clitheroe on 92 for three the rest of the batting order collapsed and the visitors were all out for 122.
Earby spread the wickets around with Nigel Hodge, Michael Rawson and David Cokell taking two each. Skipper Stephen Hipgrave and Azmat also claimed a wicket each and Azmat was the most economical bowler, conceding 17 runs in four overs.
In two Twenty/20 Group One matches that start tonight at 6.30pm, Settle travel to Clitheroe while Earby host Barnoldswick at Applegarth.
Senior Divison league matches
Settle's league game against Blackburn Northern at the Marshfield on Saturday was eventually washed out after many breaks for rain.
Settle's bowling was well below par and the visitors reached a threatening 185 for five from 26 overs. The hosts made a good attempt at the target with Ellis scoring 34 not out and Silvey 29 before the abandonment at 85 for three.
Barnoldswick's top of the table clash at home to Great Harwood was abandoned before a ball was bowled as was Earby's match at Whalley.
This Saturday Earby are at home to Read, Settle host Clitheroe and Barnoldswick travel to Padiham.
Second and third teams
Earby's second team lost to Cherry Tree's second in the quarter-finals of the Lawrenson Cup on Sunday.
Earby seconds' game against Rolls Royce, Barlick seconds' match against Rolls Royce seconds and Settle's second team match against Salesbury were all completely washed out on Saturday.
However, Settle thirds are in their highest position for five years, lying three points behind the league leaders after a hard-fought victory on Sunday against previously unbeaten Cherry Tree.
Batting first in gale force winds, Settle made the most of several dropped chances with Nick Cokell riding his luck to reach 49.
Opener Tom Elliott (25) continued his good form and Will Davidson (35) drove handsomely, while Will Metcalfe went on the attack to hit a rapid 40 not out, leaving Settle well placed on 189 for four.
In reply the visitors' fielding was the difference between the two teams with Cokell coolly taking three catches.
Ollie Gee (3-41) made a welcome return to the bowling unit, though Tom Strickland took the honours with a tally of five for 43 finally reducing Cherry Tree to 145 all out.
