Greens lose fiery first outing

Wharfedale 14 Sedgley Park 33

This was a robustly contested - sometimes fiery - friendly match against traditional pre-season opponents Sedgley Park but the Greens' coaching team judged it to be excellent preparation for the serious stuff ahead.

The 33-14 scoreline (five tries to two) in Park's favour does little justice to the Dalesmen's performance.

The National One side must have relished the work-out provided by a lively Wharfedale who operate in National Two.

It was only in the final ten minutes of the game, during which they collected three of their five tries, that Sedgley Park ensured the win.

An added perspective on this four-session training game is that whilst the Greens changed around their line-ups with 29 players being given match practice, the visitors used only 22 players - clearly allowing greater continuity.

Wharfedale's assistant coach Alex Howarth was pleased with the team's overall showing in this work out and was particularly delighted with the enthusiasm and skills demonstrated by the many young players who were given the opportunity in this game to pit themselves against full-time professionals.

The young Greens were in no measure overawed.

Indeed, several were on the field for an impressive second session in which Sedgley were pinned in their own half for most of the 20 minute period, not once entering the Wharfedale 22.

The Greens' points came from tries scored by Ryan Gill and Luke Gray - the latter going on to convert his own try.

Old faithful Mark Bedworth added a splendid conversion to Gill's score to complete the Wharfedale tally.
