Ten-wicket haul breaks league mark

There was one piece of phenomenal bowling which set a new record and the race for the First Division title continues for another week.

The bowling record came at Haworth II where Eldwick and Gilstead were the visitors. The Dick Hudson's side had J Roach with a superb 94, to thank for their total of 152 for nine in their overs with Derek Bright, Gary Searby and P Clayton taking three wickets each.

What followed when the Bronte side batted was unbelievable. Simon Timperley bowled 10.5 overs, with eight of them being maidens, and claimed ten wickets for just two runs. His partner at the other end, Andy Maude bowled 11 overs and finished with figures of zero for six as the innings closed on just nine. Three players and extras contributed two runs each, one scored one run and the rest, seven in all, were ducks!

DIVISION ONE

With just two games remaining, champions Cullingworth are in no mood to let their title go despite only being one point ahead of second placed Crossflatts.

Cullingworth thrashed 234 for three off visitors Cowling's attack. Steve Welch led the way with 62no aided by Adie Powis 56 and Brannon Varley 37 not out with Martyn Dalby taking the three wickets to fall for 77 off 18 overs. Then Chris Welch (4-29), Dave Robinson (3-12) and Varley (2-12) had the Keighley Road side out for 88.

Crossflatts entertained Thornton whose form has declined dramatically. This time Thornton were knocked over for just 81 with Mick Addy taking four four 48. The home side galloped home by eight wickets.

Third placed Oakworth, with an outside chance of the title, were made to work for the points when Glusburn visited. Glusburn posted 171 for nine before Oakworth cantered home by four wickets with Graham Rankin top scoring with 47.

Embsay are fourth, four points behind the leaders, after travelling to Barrowford and denting their survival hopes which sees the Lancashire side languishing four points adrift in bottom spot.

Barrowford struggled to 73 on a very soft wicket. Dave Hartley made 27 as Duncan Ward finished with seven for 34. Embsay lost two wickets reaching their target with Bobby Bateman making 24 not out.

Bradley are level on points with Embsay after they got things back on track at home to Sandy Lane. The Bingley side battled their way to 111 with A Qadeer making 31 as Matty Simpson took five for 43 and Neil Robinson five for 26. Bradley lost seven wickets before reaching their target led by Robinson (38) and Matt Buckmaster (32) who rescued the cause, taking the score from 22 for three to 101 for four.

The second relegation spot took another few twists after Cowling and Glusburn lost.

The latter are one point ahead of Cowling who are level with Cononley and Bingley Congs after the last two locked horns in South Craven with the latter winning by five wickets. Mathematically even Thorn-ton in seventh placed are still vulnerable.

DIVISION TWO

The champion and runner-up spots in the Second Division were sorted on Saturday.

Haworth Road will finish in top spot after they won at Sutton by 138 runs. The Baildon Bottom side made 200 for five in their overs with Waj Mahmood making 58 and Will Burgess 45. Then Shami Ali bowled in miserly fashion to claim seven for 19 off 18.5 overs as the home side were knocked over for 62.

Joining them in the top flight next season will be Haworth who hammered Ingrow St John's at Street Lane. Jamie Rowell with a super 101 and Peter Gower's 62 helped the Bronte side to 240 for five in their innings. The Saints could only muster 68 in reply.

Ingrow slip out of the third spot after they went down by 11 runs at home to Foulridge. Aussie Benno O'Keefe was in the runs again making 83 of Foulridge's 133 for nine. John Lambert (5-31) put the skids under the home side for whom Mark Price made 43 and Adie Parker 31.

Wilsden gained a point at Pendle Forest where ground conditions were more suited to growing rice. This saw them to third spot on run rate above Ingrow.

Long Lee shattered Airedale's very faint hope of stay up when they beat them by 30 runs. Richard Ayrton (51) and Steve Butter-field (6-19) were the stars for Long Lee.

Bottom side Denholme entertained Chatburn and battled their way to 87 with Rob Taylor carrying his bat with 49no. The Ribble Valley side had to work for the spoils, getting home by three wickets.

DIVISION THREE

The top two both showed their nervy side as they crashed to defeat.

Leaders Glusburn II entertained Oakworth II and the Cure Hill side warmed up for the following day's cup final by amassing 227 for five with Luke Chapman making 74 and Luke Taylor 55 as Paul McCullough claimed five for 41 against his old side. Glusburn struggled against the bowling of Ollie Stell (4-54) and Taylor (3-36) and they were dismissed for 158. For the losers Karl Samson made 54.

Meanwhile Skipton CI went down by 30 runs at home to Ingrow St John's II.

Cowling II could still spoil CI's party as they closed to within two points after seeing off visitors Carleton by seven wickets.

Promotion could be sorted out after this week's matches which sees Glusburn II at Ingrow St John's II and Cowling II entertaining Skipton CI.

Eight man Long Lee II crashed 263 for seven at home to Airedale II with Imran Haider making 89 and Mo Shahnawaz 79 as Giles Wilmore took five for 59 off 19 overs. The nine man visitors were then knocked over for just 26 with Shahnawaz taking six for ten.

It was end of season fair at Embsay II where Barrowford II were the visitors. The Bull Holme side struggled to 108-9 on a very soft wicket. The Shires Laners got home by five wickets in the 33rd over.

Next to bottom Haworth Road II kept they hopes of avoiding relegation alive with a seven-run victory over Gargrave at Baildon Bottom.

DIVISION FOUR

Riddlesden are the division champions. They secured the title at home to Ingrow II by seven wickets.

Who joins them in promotion is between Haworth West End and Eldwick & Gilstead. The Bronte side hammered the day's highest score, 282 for six, at home to Pendle Forest II. Andy Benfield smashed his way to 157 then Joe Bottomley took six for 46 to help Pendle back to the hut for 115.

Eldwick & Gilstead will be down on the prayer mats this week as they entertain Riddlesden.

Pendle Forest II are immune from relegation because they cannot be demoted into the same division as their third team. So that heaps added pressure on the sides just above them - Thornton II, Sandy Lane II, Chatburn II and Bradley II.

Thornton II put up one of their best batting displays of the season when they made 214-5 in their overs with Brian Laycock making 88 and Matt Foster 57. However it wasn't enough as visitors Crossflatts stormed home by three wickets.

Martin Rendell (5-13) helped Culling-worth II dismiss Chatburn II for 71 in the Ribble Valley. The visitors knocked off the runs for the loss of six wickets.

Evergreen Tim Rudden took five for 39 to help Bradley II beat Sandy Lane II by just 17 runs.

DIVISION FIVE

The race for the title sees Cononley II, who are promoted, just one point ahead of Wilsden II. The latter could still be caught by Glusburn III.

Cononley II saw off Bingley Congs II by 25 runs whilst Wilsden II were 44 runs too strong for Riddlesden II.

Glusburn III struggled to 76 for six at the end of their overs. Then Craig Watts (6-34) saw visitors Sutton II restricted to 69.

Denholme II travelled to Gargrave II and came away winners by 17 runs and Haworth WE II won by 98 runs at Foulridge II.

Skipton CI II won by ten wickets at Pendle Forest III and there was no play at Eldwick & Gilstead II where Oakworth III should have been the visitors.
